Method for providing a chromatic effect tortoiseshell a metal coating on a substrate, comprising: - heating the metallic substrate to a suitable temperature for providing a chromatic effect, said temperature being quite a low temperature at which no distortions thermal caused to the substrate, - applying under heat at a temperature of 40 to 110, in a part of said metal substrate, an oxidizing solution comprising sodium thiosulfate or potassium, a reactive metal selected from copper acetate and lead acetate and mixtures thereof, and an acidifying compound.
