Production of stable lactide particles includes contacting a continuous flow of molten lactide with a surface having a temperature lower than the melting point of lactide, allowing lactide melt to solidify on the surface, and subsequently removing solid lactide as lactide particles from the surface. An INDEPENCENT CLAIM is included for a stable lactide particle having surface area per unit of volume of 1000-10000/m, lactide content of more than 95 wt.%, water content of less than 200 ppm, and free lactic acid content of less than 50 milli-equivalents/kg.
