An aqueous gel-forming composition comprises (wt.%) aluminosilicate (5-40) comprising alkali metal aluminate and alkali metal silicate, and organic liquid (0.1-10) having a boiling point of greater than 110[deg] C. Molar ratio of silicon dioxide to alkali metal oxide of alkali metal silicate is 3.6:1-10:1, and molar ratio of alkali metal oxide of alkali metal aluminate to aluminum oxide is 1.35:1. Independent claims are included for: (1) a precursor composition for use in the preparation of an aqueous gel-forming composition; (2) an application system for forming a coating composition and applying the coating composition to a substrate, comprising alkali metal aluminate stored in a first storage unit, aqueous solution of alkali metal silicate in second storage unit, organic liquid in a third storage unit or in the first and/or second storage unit, a unit for mixture of the components, and application unit for effecting coating of the substrate with the mixture; (3) a substrate which is other than an article or part of an article formed only of foamed polymer; (4) an aluminosilicate film produced from the composition, where the film has long term water solubility of no greater than 25%; (5) a method of making a coating composition, comprising mixing alkali metal aluminate, aqueous solution of a metal silicate, and organic liquid; and (6) a method of coating, impregnating or applying the composition to a substrate.
