摘要
The timber trade occupies a wide range of industries especially in India. Carpenter's plane is a hand tool, which is often used specially for fine and proper leveling of wooden components during making the wooden furniture, small wooden utensils etc. Traditionally the wooden blocks are placed on a table (height 80 cm.) and then this Carpenter's plane is used on it, by pulling forward and backward the carpenter's plane on the wooden blocks. In the present study different problems of this existing tool have been evaluated and attempts have been made to redesign the same from the viewpoint of ergonomics. Two new design concepts have been developed. Different body dimensions that are related to hand tool design were taken from the carpenters. Percentile values of body dimensions were used to select the final dimensions of the Carpenter's plane. An evaluation of the modified design of the land leveler has been done by employing joint angle study, productivity study and work pulse computation. From the subjective assessment it has been noted that the feeling of pain of discomfort was reduced remarkably while using the modified hand-tool than that of existing one. It was also observed that the work pulse and productivity showed significant favourable change in case of newly designed hand-tool than that of existing hand-tool. It was concluded that the design of Carpenter's Plane has drastically been changed so that it has become a new hand-tool, which would be comfortable.
