PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber fusion splicing monitoring device that enables connection with a small loss to be stably performed.;SOLUTION: The device is equipped with: a fiber position controller 18 for controlling an abutting position between discharge electrodes 10 of optical fibers 1a, 1b; a discharge controller 14 for controlling an electric current to the discharge electrodes 10; an image processor 16 for prescribing a position for measuring an eccentric quantity which is a deviation between the external shape center 4a, 4b and the core 2a, 2b of each optical fiber 1a, 1b; a storage section for preliminarily storing the optimum range of an eccentric change quantity which becomes a small connection loss obtained on the basis of a connection loss in fusion splicing under various heating conditions and the eccentric change quantity indicating difference between eccentric quantities before and after each fusion splicing; and a core position calculating section 17 for determining the eccentric change quantity from the eccentric quantities before and after the fusion splicing which is measured at the eccentric quantity measuring position prescribed by the image processor 16, for discriminating whether or not the change quantity is in the optimum range, and for monitoring, on the discrimination result, whether or not the fusion splicing is with a small connection loss.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
