PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means of selectively chemically modifying the C terminal site of -polylysine.;SOLUTION: This process for producing a chemically modified -polylsine represented by formula (3) {wherein R2 is R3O-, R3S- or R3R4N- (wherein R3 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; and R4 is H, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl); and n is 2 or greater} comprises the steps of: () urethanizing -polylysine with an alkyloxycarbonylating agent to give a urethanized -polylysine; () chemically modifying the urethanized -polylysine by using its C terminal site to give a chemically modified urethanized -polylysine; and () subjecting the chemically modified urethanized -polylysine to dealkyloxycarbonylation to give a chemically modified -polylysine.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
