PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid stepped noise that could occur when enlarging or compressing a digital image.;SOLUTION: Using a plurality of triangles each of which has its three apexes located on pixels, a digital image is virtually divided in accordance with the following conditions (1)-(3): (1) the triangles do not overlap; (2) all pixels within the range of expansion be located inside or on the sides of either triangle; and (3) when a triangular plane is determined from the three dimension of position data and luminance data which three pixels 1, 2, 3, 4 located on the three apexes of each triangle each have and when the actual luminance data of each pixel located inside or on a side of the corresponding triangle is compared with calculated luminance data determined from the actual position data of the same pixel by use of the triangle plane, the difference between them be within a predetermined range or the result of statistically processing the difference be within a predetermined range. A gap between the pixels that arises upon expansion of the digital image is interpolated by the pixels having the position data and the luminance data obtained from the triangular plane.
