PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of accurately measuring a tangential force interacting between a wheel and a rail without providing a new strain gage bridge for tangential force measurement.;SOLUTION: This invention provides a method of measuring a tangential force which interacts between a rail and a railway vehicle wheel by using a PQ wheel set. This method measures a strain of a running wheel by a wheel load measuring strain gage for detecting wheel's radial strains. A relationship of tangential forces and strains read by strain gages for measurement of tangential forces is pre-determined by comparing a strain at each strain gage position when only a wheel load is working, and a strain at each strain gage position when only a tangential force is working. The tangential force working on a running PQ wheel set is obtained from these strains and the predetermined relationship. While a railway vehicle is running, this method can actually measure tangential forces required to improve the curve running, high-speed running, and acceleration/deceleration performances from the output of existing strain gages for wheel load measurement without increasing the number of test points.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
