The device (500) has a pyro-electric sensor (502) for delivering an electric signal representing passage of a living being (114) in front of the sensor. A pyro-electric cell (102) has detection windows (104, 106), and delivers another electric signal representing the passage of the living being in front of the pyro-electric cell. A processing unit determines the number of living beings passing in front of the device by analyzing the former signal, and the passage direction of the living beings by analyzing the signals.
