The method involves determining a set of powers transmitted by sub-groups of sub-carriers, where each of the determined power set conforms to an optimal frequency distribution of a total power transmitted for the set of powers between the sub-carriers of the set. The determination of the power set is performed by minimizing an overall-error criteria e.g. bit error rate, under the constraint that sum of determined power set is equal to a product of number of sub-carriers of sub-groups and a total mean power transmitted on the sub-carriers. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a transmitter for performing space division multiplexing of a signal to be transmitted on sub-carriers (2) a transmission system comprising a transmitter (3) a computer program comprising program instructions to perform a method of performing space division multiplexing of a signal to be transmitted on sub-carriers (4) a digital signal intended to be utilized in a transmitter (5) an information medium comprising instructions to perform a method of performing space division multiplexing of a signal to be transmitted on sub-carriers.
