Apparatus for preventing prolonged hypoglycemia leading to diabetes comprises a biosensor for glucose which is inserted into the subcutaneous tissue or a vein. This is connected to a control unit which compares signals produced by the sensor with those for normal levels of glucose and operates a micropump when they are below it. The pump can deliver 0.3 - 10 ml/min of solution from a reservoir containing a 50 g/l glucose solution through a catheter into the patient's vein or subcutaneous tissue.
