The device has an elongated bar (100) comprising two matrix image sensors (120, 160) each providing a two dimensional image. Each sensor has a set of lines and columns placed at the ends of the bar. Optic fields of the sensors superpose and surround a surface. A computer (125) stores a region of interest, for each sensor, where the region of interest is formed of a set of line segments and a set of column segments of an image provided by the sensors. The computer determines the position of a pointer cutting the surface based on part of images of the pointer found in the region of interest. An independent claim is also included for a method for rendering a volume or surface interactive.
