A ball valve for use in laboratory high pressure liquid chromatography equipment has a ruby ball (20) and a closure seat (80) made from an alumina or zirconia ceramic. The ball is preferably spring-loaded (40) , but may also be closed by gravity either under its own weight or by an added load.
