The device has a transmission device for optical signals e.g. laser signals, and a reception device for the reception of the signals reflected by surfaces such as rails. An evaluation device determines geometrical characteristics, where an arrangement is intended for optical scanning of the surfaces, which have reflection surfaces, where the arrangement has a transverse profile control device (12) arranged in distance to a cross section of the surface and a drive (21) for the movement of a scanning device on a slide or a carriage (7) along the control device.
