The method involves determining a empirical fluorescence function between two fluorescence spectrums of an optical brightner in two illuminants. A sample reflectance spectrum is separated into a sample fluorescence and a sample reflection portion of one of the illuminants. The sample fluorescence portion is converted into a numeric sample fluorescence portion of another illuminant. The numeric sample fluorescence portion is combined to a numeric sample reflectance spectrum of the latter illuminant. The colormetric value for the latter illuminant is determined from the numeric sample spectrum.
