The method involves inflating a pressure cuff (12) to an initial inflate pressure, and obtaining a series of oscillation impulses by a pressure sensor (26), when the cuff is continuously released based on the pressure. The impulses are compared with preset impulse ratings, and the continuous release of the cuff is terminated, when the impulses deviate from the ratings. The cuff is released in a sequence of pressure levels after the interruption. A set of oscillation impulses is obtained during each level, and blood pressure of a patient is calculated based on the impulses.
