The method involves determining a signal-to-noise ratio of received pilot signals. A channel length hypothesis is fixed with different channel lengths, such that an associated channel power is computed from the received signals for each hypothesis. A distortion power is computed based on the signal-to-noise ratio for each channel length hypothesis. The channel length hypothesis for receiving a utility signal is selected based on the distortion power and the channel power, where the selected hypothesis consists of the smallest possible channel estimation error. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for implementing the method of radio channel estimation.
