The method involves penetrating an end (22) of a penetration tool (12) into an intake lining (18) in a minimal invasive manner. Temperatures and/or temperature profiles arising during penetrating and moving the tool before and/or after the end of the penetration tool (12) are measured, and temperatures and temperature variations of an erosion or removal of the intake lining are measured by a temperature measuring device (14) e.g. thermography camera. Characteristic material parameters of the intake lining are determined based on measured temperature data. An independent claim is also included for a device for testing a running-in behavior of intake linings.
