Preparation of 3-amino-3-methyl-1-butanol (I) comprises reacting 3-methylbut-3-en-1-ol or 3-methylbut-2-en-1-ol with a nitrile compound (a) in the presence of an acid condensation agent; reacting the obtained product with an aqueous potassium hydroxide solution and extracting the product using a suitable solvent. Preparation of 3-amino-3-methyl-1-butanol (I) comprises reacting 3-methylbut-3-en-1-ol or 3-methylbut-2-en-1-ol with a nitrile compound of formula R1-CN (a) in the presence of an acid condensation agent; reacting the obtained product with an aqueous potassium hydroxide solution and extracting the product using a suitable solvent. R1H, 1-6C alkyl, 2-6C alkenyl or phenyl containing one or more residues, which are inert under reaction conditions, preferably methyl.
