The method involves detecting cryptographic data of a portable data storage medium, and transmitting data from a personalization system to a processing device. Response data of the processing device are received as another cryptographic data from the personalization system, where the response data are determined based on the detected cryptographic data. A personalization step is carried out based on the response data. An independent claim is also included for a personalization system for personalizing a portable data storage medium.
