The unit has an input and an output that are connected with each other by a rotation/torque conversion mechanism. A reverse running notch (4) is arranged between a countershaft (10) and the output, and a hydrodynamic retarder (1) has a rotor wheel and a stator. The wheel is connected with the output by a vertical drive (22) and with an intermediate wheel, where the drive is a component of the notch.
