A white light diode comprises an exciting light source (124) radiating in the region of 250 - 490 nm and a fluorescent powder distributed around and receiving the light. The powder mixture is chosen from the group (Me1-x-yEuxRey)8Mgz(SiO4)mCln, (Me1-x-yEuxRey)S, (Ca1-x-ySrxBay)5(PO4)3Cl:Eu2+ and Gd2+. An independent claim is also included for an LED and LED chip as above.
