Decorative motor vehicle component manufacture involves inserting expandable bellows into opening in component to press overlapping edge of cover material into opening and onto inner wall
A decorative cover layer(5) is applied onto the visible side(3) of a supporting part(4) of the component(1). The cover initially has an edge(6) which radially overlaps an opening(2) for a subsequently inserted component. An expandable compression member(7) then presses the overlapping edge into the opening(2) and onto an inner wall(8) of the opening. Compression is applied by a bellows(7) expanded by internal pressure, the bellows being inserted from the visible side of the component(1) into the opening(2) so that the cover edge(6) is pressed into the opening. The opening(2) widens out, in particular conically, from the visible side(3) towards the opposing mounting side(9) of the supporting part(4) and the cover edge is pressed by the bellows onto the undercut angled inner wall(8). On the visible side of the component the opening has a rounded edge(11) onto which the cover is pressed. Easier folding of the cover(5) into the opening is aided by radial slits in the cover edge. During insertion into the opening the bellows are preinflated so that the radial dimension(D) is slightly larger than that(a) of the opening. A central area of the cover surrounded by the cover edge may be prepunched and cut out when the bellows are inserted. During insertion part of the bellows projects out of the mounting side of the component and is enclosed and held by an opposing tool part(14). A heat sensitive adhesive coating on the cover bonds the turned over cover edge onto the opening inner wall. An independent claim is included for the process equipment which includes a holder(16) for the decorative component(1) and an expandable bellows which inserts into an opening in the decorative component and presses the edge of the decorative cover onto the opening inner wall.
