A quarter pixel unit memory indexing for efficient quarter pixel unit motion estimation is provided to store pixels interpolated in a quarter unit in a memory through indexing in consideration of a quarter-unit motion estimation algorithm to improve a motion estimation rate. A single macro-block is divided into a 16x16, 16x8, 8x16 and 8x8 blocks, the 8x8 block is divided into 8x4, 4x8 and 4x4 blocks, the seven block modes are searched for an integer pixel, and a memory is indexed. A half pixel unit interpolation is performed on the integer pixel to search a half pixel, and the memory is indexed. A quarter pixel unit interpolation is carried out on the half pixel to search a quarter pixel, and memory indexing is performed.
