A method and a system for tracking a moving target by a stereo camera based on panning/tilting control are provided to detect distance information of a target and three-dimensional movement information thereof regardless of various changes of the target in real time by actively controlling the stereo camera of a panning/tilting type, thereby adaptively tracking the target. Only a face portion of a moving target is detected by a stereo camera on which panning/tilting units are mounted. A central coordinate of a face of the detected moving target is determined. Control angles of the panning/tilting units are calculated by Kanatani image information algorithm so that the moving target is put in the center of camera view and an optical axis of the stereo camera is equal to the central coordinate of the face thereof, and then the panning/tilting units are driven. A position of the moving target is recognized by the calculated control angles and displayed on a three-dimensional coordinates system. The position of the moving target displayed according to movement of the central coordinate thereof is monitored.
