A method for controlling handoff in a broadband distributed network system by using an MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) scheme is provided to minimize time delay and to make it possible to transmit data regularly. A method for controlling handoff in a broadband distributed network system by using an MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) scheme comprises the following several steps. Channels for transmitting or receiving data to or from a terminal are classified into the first channels and the second channels and activated cells are set(701). Propagation strength of a predetermined cell is received from the terminal, the propagation strength of the predetermined cell is measured and an on or off state of the cell is determined(702). According as the state of the cell is determined to be on, the first channels of the activated cell are released, a path is switched to the first channels, and the second channels of the activated cell are maintained(703). The propagation strength of the activated cell is received from the terminal, the received propagation strength is measured, and the activated cell turns off if the measured propagation strength of the activated cell is lower than a preset threshold(704-706). According as the activated cell is turned off, the second channels of the activated cell are released, and a path is switched to the second channels of the cell(707).
