A service system for notifying of a missing SMS(Short Message Service) reception number and a method therefor are provided to enable an SMSC(SMS Center) to delete a short message if the short message is transmitted to a reception number which is a missing number, and to send a message indicating that message transmission is unavailable owing to the missing number to a sender, thus the sender can retransmit the message to an exact reception number. A short message sent to a reception number which is a missing number owing to a mistake in a sender's mobile terminal is transmitted to an SMSC(S310). The SMSC inquires about a mobile terminal position of the reception number in an HLR(Home Location Register)(S320). The HLR transmits information indicative of a missing number without a receiver to the SMSC(S330). The SMSC deletes the received message(S340), and writes a guide message about the reason of not sending the message(S350). The SMSC sends the written message to the sender's mobile terminal(S360).
