Preparation of an alkali metal alcoholate and trialkylborate comprises reacting an alkali metal metaborate with an alcohol to form an alkali metal tetraalkylborate salt and then cleaving the tetraalkylborate to form a mixture of alkali metal alcoholate and trialkylborate. Preparing an alcoholate of formula ZOR (I) and trialkyl borate comprises: reacting a metaborate of formula Z(BO2) with an alcohol of formula ROH (III) to form a boron compound of formula Z[B(OR)4] (VII) and water; and cleaving (VII) to form (I) and trialkyl borate. Z : monovalent alkaline metal cation, preferably sodium; and R : optionally branched 1-4C alkyl, preferably CH3. An independent claim is included for a process of regeneration of sodium borohydride that has been hydrolyzed to sodium metaborate and hydrogen during storage, comprising incorporating the sodium metaborate into the reaction process.
