A method of creating a pictograph from one or more words is described. The words comprise characters of an alphabet. The method comprises providing a shape defined by a line; dividing the line into a number of segments (220); and marking one or more of the segments (260). One of the following is the case: the number of segments is related to the number of characters in the alphabet (220), there is a segment corresponding to each respective character of the alphabet (230), the segments marked correspond to each character in the one or more words (260), (270), (280), and an attribute of each marked segment is related to the position of the corresponding character of the one or more words (250); or the number of segments is related to the number of characters in the one or more words, each segment corresponds to a position of a character in the one or more words, and each segment is marked such that an attribute of each marked segment designates the character at the respective position in the one or more words.
