Novel Chinese pharmaceutical compositions for treating upper respiratory tract infection and processes for preparation thereof. The present Chinese pharmaceutical compositions are prepared from Radix isatidis and Fructus gardeniae by: decocting 1 to 3 times with 5 to 12 volumes of water, each for 0.5 to 3 hours; combining and concentrating the decoctions; adding ethanol to precipitate, ethanol content being 40% to 85%, refrigerating for 12 to 48 hours; filtering, recovering ethanol under reduced pressure from the filtrate, concentrating to cream; adding 2 to 6 volumes of water for injection, placing for 48 hours, filtering, concentrating; extracting 2 to 6 times with n-butanol of 1 to 3 volumes each, evaporating n- butanol, yielding the Chinese pharmaceutical preparation, as a solid; mixing the resulting Chinese pharmaceutical preparation with pharmaceutical excipients, and processing into Chinese pharmaceutical compositions of the present invention by conventional procedures of pharmacy.
