An electronic circuit determines the instance and position of impact on mechanical structure by measuring the difference between the times signals are output from piezoelectric sensors distributed on structure while knowing the position of each sensor on the structure. Instance and position of impact are determined using phenomenon of sound wave propagation through a material of structure after impact has taken place, and based on constant speed of propagation of sound wave in an isotropic material.
