The method involves using protocols to allow the execution of a reprogramming program and data loading and unloading program for reprogramming an electronic label. The reprogramming program and data loading and unloading program are obtained from an interrogator equipment. The electronic label includes a reboot mechanism which can be activated locally or remote by a shipper, and a static or semi-static memory for receiving and storing data and program from the interrogator equipment.
