摘要
Titanium is dissolved in a metal which is more inert and this mixture is melted to forming the anode. Electrolysis is then carried out using an electrolyte comprising a molten salt mixture and titanium dichloride, and a solid titanium cathode. A process for electrorefining titanium from a metal mixture in an electrolysis cell comprises the following steps: (A) dissolving the titanium in at least one different metal which is more inert than titanium; (B) forming an anode by melting the titanium-containing mixture; (C) using an electrolyte comprising a molten salt mixture and titanium dichloride; and (D) using a cathode comprising solid titanium. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) method for preparing a metal mixture comprising titanium and at least one other metal which is more inert than titanium, by preparing a solution of titanium in the metal by adding rutile, titania or titanium tetrachloride to an electrolysis cell containing a graphite anode, an electrolyte comprising a liquid calcium chloride mixture, and a cathode formed by one or more liquid metals which are more inert than titanium; and (2) apparatus for carrying out the first method.
