The present invention provides agents and methods for dual modality virtualcolonoscopy that gives both anatomical and functional information using hybridCT/ PET scanning. In preferred embodiments, the present invention providesradiolabeled tumor ispecific agents and methods for distinguishing benignpolyps from malignant tumors. In further embodiments, the present inventionprovides compositions and methods useful for distinguishing morphologicaland functional subregions of a selected region of tissue based on relative levelsof phospholipid metabolism. Preferred radiolabeled tumor-specific agentsare phospholipid ether analogs labeled with a halogen radioisotope. In certainpreferred embodiments, the compositions including radiolabeled phospholipidether analogs have therapeutic actions in addition to functionally identifyingmalignant tissue.
