Cobalt, manganese and nickel-containing single phase lithium transition metal oxide compounds can be prepared by wet-milling cobalt, manganese, nickel and lithium-containing oxides or oxide precursors to form a finely divided suspension containing cobalt, manganese, nickel and nickel. lithium, and heating the suspension to provide a cobalt, manganese and nickel-containing lithium transition metal oxide compound and having a substantially single-phase O3 crystal structure.
