A preferred embodiment of the Basic Construction Unit (BCU) has a center ball with four spaced apart longitudinal cylinder members (stalks) of equal length and transverse cross sections. The stalks proximal ends are fixed symmetrically around a circle disposed on one hemisphere of the center ball, perpendicular to the central axis of the hemisphere. Each of the stalks project distal to an end ball fixed coaxial to the stalk's free end. The end balls and stalks of the BCU are arranged as adjacent pairs of resilient cantilever members spaced together so that one of the balls from a first BCU will be confined within a cage region defined by the center ball and the cantilevers of a second BCU. The resilient cantilevers can be separated by applying opposing lateral forces sufficient to allow the otherwise confined ball from the first BCU to be freely removed or inserted into the cage region. A set of identical BCUs with different colored balls can be concatenated into complex, patterned structures by varied repetitions of such caged-ball connections.
