PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as a material for silverhalide photosensitive materials. ;SOLUTION: This sultone compound of formula I (A₁ and A₂ are each H, an alkyl, aryl, heterocyclic ring provided that either of Al₁ and A₂ is not H; La is methylene), for example, a compound of formula II, is obtained by making a compound of CH- CC-CH₂OH react with a compound of K₂S₂O₅, and adding hydrochloric acid to the resultant. Using this compound of formula I as a starting material, a quaternary salt compound of formula III (L₁ and L₂ are each methine; V₁ is H or a monovalent substituent; Z₁ is an atomic group necessary for forming a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring; p₁ is 0 or 1; M₁ is a charge-equilibrium counterion; m₁ is 0-10). Further, using a compound of formula III as starting material, a methine compound of formula TV (Q is methine or polymethine) is obtained. A silver halide photosensitive material that contains a compound of formula III and/or a compound of formula TV has high sensitivity and storage stability, and cause less fog, is obtained.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
