PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material identification method and an apparatus using fast neutrons and continuous-energy spectrum X-rays.;SOLUTION: The material identification method includes a step for irradiating an object to be tested with a beam of fast neutrons and a beam of continuous-energy spectrum X-rays each produced at a fast-neutron source 12 and a continuous-energy spectrum X-ray source 22 (a); a step for directly measuring the intensities of a transmitted X-ray beam and a transmitted fast neutron beam at an X-ray detector array 28 and a neutron detector array 18 (b); and a step for identifying the materials of the object to be tested on the basis of a curve formed on the basis of attenuations difference between the neutron beam and the X-ray beam transmitted through different materials of the object to be tested (c). In this case, the transmission attenuation intensities of fast neutrons and continuous-energy spectrum X-rays are constituted in such a way as to be different from each other, and an n-X curve not related to the thickness of the object to be tested but only related to equal effective atomic numbers Z of the object to be tested.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
