PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form different aluminide-diffusion coatings on different regions of a superalloy member such as a gas turbine engine blade and a vane. PSOLUTION: The substrate is subjected to a vapor-phase aluminizing by placing the substrate in a coating chamber in which an aluminum-containing coating gas flows and heating the substrate to an elevated coating temperature inside the coating chamber in the presence of the coating gas. In the coating chamber, a first surface region of the substrate is surrounded by a masking enclosure having one or more coating gas inlet apertures that communicate to an interior chamber with the coating gas in the coating chamber, and a second surface region of the substrate is freely communicated with the coating gas in the coating chamber. By heating the substrate, an aluminum-diffusion coating growing outward and the aluminide-diffusion coating growing inward are simultaneously formed on the first and second surface regions, respectively, of the same substrate.
