The device has a support provided for mounting a rudder on a rear part of a craft (5). The support has a guide rail (6) that is connected to the craft and a movable part (9) which is connected to the rudder. The part (9) is displaced with respect to the rail so as to permit a transversal displacement of the part (9) with respect to the craft. A positioning unit is provided for displacing the part (9) with respect to the rail based on an angle of heel to maximize the useful surface of a rudder blade (1).
