The method involves measuring the electrical or magnetic characteristics representing a constraint level of a structural unit e.g. vertical stay rod, keel beam and axle system, on each of the landing gears, using an on-line eddy current sensor. A characteristic quantity and the weight of an aircraft are evaluated based on the measured characteristics. The characteristics are selected from a group comprising magnetic permeability, electrical conductivity and electrical permittivity. The unit presents the constraint level based on a fraction of the aircraft weight carried by the landing gears. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining the weight and a characteristic quantity for a center of gravity of an aircraft resting on the ground.
