The method involves determining a level of occupancy of a buffer, and comparing the level of occupancy with a preset threshold. An encoding mode from amongst multiple encoding modes is determined when the level of occupancy is above the preset threshold, and a sample is encoded based on the determined encoding mode. The sample is encoded based on a default encoding mode when the level is below the preset threshold. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a method of decoding an encoded digital image signal (B) a device for encoding a digital image signal (C) a device for decoding an encoded digital image signal (D) a telecommunications system comprising multiple terminal devices (E) a computer program stored on an information medium, the program containing instructions for implementing the method of encoding a digital image signal (F) a computer program stored on an information medium, the program containing instructions for implementing the method of decoding an encoded digital image signal.
