The preparation of a composite material consists of impregnating a micro-porous or meso-porous solid material with a solution of one or more metallic or oxide nanoparticle precursors, then reducing the precursors at the heart of the material to form the matrix. The impregnation is effected under saturated vapor pressure and under reflowing of the precursor solution, and the reduction is carried out by radiolysis. An independent claim is also included for a composite material made up of a matrix of a micro-porous or meso-porous solid material and some metal or metal oxide nanoparticles, in which the matrix material may be disordered, ordered or possibly oriented and the nanoparticles are mono-dispersed by size when the matrix material is ordered or oriented and mono-dispersed by size, with a size identical to that of the porosity of the matrix material, when the matrix material is disordered.
