The method involves developing an engine output indicator (RM) and a charge requirement indicator (BC) representing respectively fuel consumption and fuel efficiency/charge state. A control parameter (C) is developed according to the indicators (BC, RM). A reference voltage (Vcons) of an alternator is developed according to the parameter, and the above steps are repeated at predetermined intervals. The engine output indicator (RM) represents the fuel consumption necessary for supplying an engine torque unit, and the charge requirement indicator (BC) represents the fuel efficiency/charge state, to maintain the electrical charge of a battery (3) at a level included in a preset value range. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle with an alternator, battery and units for controlling the alternator according to an alternator controlling method.
