The method involves obtaining a set of images representing nocturnal scenes of successive routes. The images are processed for detecting a traffic condition demanding a commutation of headlamps from a high beam state towards a low beam state, where the condition is detected from a preset number of successive images of the image set. The headlamps are controlled towards the low beam state, when the condition is detected. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a device for controlling an automatic commutation of a headlamp of a motor vehicle from a high beam state to a low beam state (B) an information storage medium storing programs whose execution allows an implementation of a method for controlling an automatic commutation of a headlamp of a motor vehicle from a high beam state to a low beam state.
