Diesel-electric straddle carrier for transporting, stacking containers in container terminals and dockyards temporarily stores energy generated by motors in electrical braking mode and returns to intermediate d.c. circuit in motor mode
The device has a diesel engine (1) driving a generator (2) that feeds electrical energy via a rectifier (3) to an intermediate d.c. circuit (4) connected to inverters (6) for feeding drive and lift motors (7,8) with polyphase electricity and with an energy storage device (12) of connected ultra capacitors (13) connected to the intermediate d.c. circuit via an electronic switch (10) with an anti-parallel connected diode (11) and a controller (15). Energy produced by motors acting as generators in electrical braking mode is temporarily stored in the storage device and returned to the intermediate d.c. circuit in motor mode.
