The device has a base (10) with a journal slot (11) for rotation of a balanced support (20), a balanced support arranged symmetrically with respect to the central axis and with an n-shaped yoke (21) with a supporting pin (22) acting as a rotary journal and with magnets (30) of identical weight on either end to hold the support in equilibrium. A compass rose (23) is arranged according to the magnet pole direction to determine North direction and azimuth. The support is free to rotate on the base and enables direct read-off of North direction.
