The steel belt(14) is stripped way from the rubber(16) at a separating unit(10,12). The separated steel belt is pulled away from the rubber in one direction by a first roll(18) while the remaining ribbed rubber(16) is pulled by a second roll(20) in another direction. Separated steel belts(14) are wound onto the first take-off roll(18) and ribbed rubber(16) onto a second take-off roll(20). The separating unit comprises two or more rolls(10,12). Heaters(26) are located prior to and/or at the separating rolls. A tensioning unit comprising two opposing rolls(30,32) with an adjustable gap sets the tension of rubber separated from the steel bands and is located between the separating rolls and the rubber take-off roll. An independent claim is included for a process for dismantling rubber and steel conveyer belts in which the steel and rubber parts are pulled in two different directions so that the steel belt is torn out of the rubber.
