In the first stage of manufacture, the working surface is assembled from two panels (2, 3) which sandwich and are bonded to, an aluminum honeycomb inlay (4). The aluminum unit (1) is then heated at its circumference, until the adhesive bond is released around the edges. External pressure is applied to the inlay (4), forcing it in, to leave a circumferential space between the two panels. This space is then filled by a plastic extrusion process which also forms the edging profile (5). The edging (5) is plastic introduced using a hand extruder. As required, it is then mechanically finished by milling or polishing. The honeycomb inlay is pressed-in using a former. An independent claim is included for the working surface so produced.
