A current extractor (160) extracts response current components in respect to injection voltages, upon start of reluctance motor. A position/speed estimator (180) calculates rotor position error based on extracted response current components, to estimate speed and position of the rotor. An independent claim is included for a method of controlling the startup of a motor according to a sensorless control scheme.
